This is nicely written, thoughtful post. I am conflicted. One of the things I loved about a more open search - "unprejudiced" results - for me - the more customized results - the more narrow the "world wide web" becomes..

I'm also the kind of person that is not so easily influenced by what my friends think...

So hum...to me it feels the world is narrowing...taking away one of things I loved about a web search...

I agree, a whole year to accomplish something without a set of smaller tasks to complete can end up looking like failure waiting to happen. Thanks for the tips and laying it out for us with structure. Cheers to YOUR 2012!

I worked in Design for years and no one could seem to understand Point #2. Yes it will only take 5 minutes to actually make a change, but it could take an hour or more to set things up and be able to produce something that can be uploaded or printed.

And even after almost 20 years of design being done on computer vs. boards, I still run into people who think because it's is done on a computer it is effortless.

You've really nailed it here. When providing professional services, I believe that part of our job is to help our clients learn what is possible, how we work, and what is reasonable. We must always remember that each client believes that he or she is most important and that the money he or she pays us for our services feels like a lot. What amazes me is that when I've been the client receiving professional services, I've been guilty of some of the very things that challenge me as a service provider. Patience, understanding, trust, and a free exchange of ideas is the only way to overcome these obstacles. Thanks for a wonderful post. -- Dr. Laura Hills, Blue Pencil Institute

Thanks for that Mark - yes, good thing to add to the basic observations and to see if there happens to be a correlation between the accounts that seem to be doing best in the public's eyes, and whether they have clearly identified the humans behind the account. Feedback has already indicated that there is clear variation in some corporate twitter accounts when the main person behind them changes, which makes a lot of sense. It also feeds back to how robust the social media strategy and policy is, to enable continuity when the social media manager changes.
